Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores that release sweat under your arms, with the active ingredient typically being aluminum. Research, including one study recently published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, shows that aluminum is not only absorbed by your body, but it is deposited in your breast tissue. It can even be found in nipple aspirate fluid, a fluid that reflects the microenvironment in your breast.
Researchers found that the level of aluminum in nipple aspirate fluid was significantly higher in women with breast cancer compared to healthy women. These results suggest an indication for raised levels of aluminum as a biomarker for identification of women at higher risk of developing breast cancer.
Though often added to non-organic deodorant and antiperspirant, aluminum is one of the worst metals you can put on your skin, and it may lead to health issues when applied to the body.
